Spain Golf Courses

Spain with its sunny climate and stunning landscapes has long been a popular tourist destination for Europeans, especially the Costa del Sol. To cater for a sizeable ex-pat and tourist interest, notably British, Spain has a fine selection of golf courses in the popular areas. Here is just a selection.

Almenara

An18-hole golf course opened in March 1998, the layout has two clearly defined sections, the first of which traces its path through wooded terrain. The second, more open area course hugs the shores of a spectacular lake.

Suggested accommodations to base yourself at while playing Almenara: All hotels.

 La Alcaidesa

Opened in 1992, La Alcaidesa is billed as Spain's first links golf course. Golfers will not find another experience like it anywhere else in Spain. Located to the west of the San Roque Club in an area rich with enthusiastic golfers, the course offers spectacular views from its cliff-top perch of the Mediterranean over to Gibraltar. The course itself has undergone an extensive program of remodeling, resulting in a much more forgiving layout, acceptable for golfers of all abilities.

Suggested accommodations to base yourself at while playing La Alcaidesa: All hotels.

La Cala Golf and Country Club

This sunny Mijas golf and country club features 36 holes, a golf academy and a 6-hole, par-3 course. Both courses challenge all levels of players; however, most holes reward accuracy rather than power off the tees. The country club includes a large clubhouse with squash courts, indoor swimming pool, tennis courts, restaurant and a well-stocked pro shop.

Suggested accommodations to base yourself at while playing La Cala Golf and Country Club: All hotels.

 La Quinta

Overlooking Marbella's golf valley, La Quinta has one of the coast's best-appointed clubhouses. The narrow up-and-down course calls for accuracy, stamina and a low handicap. The holes themselves are quite varied with the 18th being the most exciting.

Suggested accommodations to base yourself at while playing La Quinta: All hotels.

Montecastillo

Golden Bear Jack Nicklaus' first design, Montecastillo follows the master's principle, "what you see is what you get." The long course offers a multitude of opportunities for golfers to make their shots. The spectacular 18th hole shows off high tees, a hotel on the right and a lake to the left.

Suggested accommodations to base yourself at while playing La Alcaidesa: All hotels.

Montemayor Golf Course

Malaga-born Pepe Gancedo designed this new 18-hole golf course in the hills between San Pedro de Alcantara and Estepona. Montemayor, the Costa del Sol's most spectacular golf course, nestles in a high mountain valley setting.

Suggested accommodations to base yourself at while playing La Alcaidesa: All hotels.

 San Roque Golf Club

Two linking 9-hole circuits, each reflecting a different character of landscape, make up this 6,440-meter course. The Andalucian headquarters of the PGA European Tour, San Roque has hosted many major tournaments.

Suggested accommodations to base yourself at while playing San Roque Golf Club: All hotels.

Sotogrande Old

This Robert Trent Jones course, opened in 1964, is often voted among the top ten courses in Europe. An old master among clubs on the coast, golfers know it as Soto Grande "Old" to differentiate it from its younger neighbor Valderrama. The layout has well-established vegetation and the total lack of rough on the immaculately groomed fairways offers a great consolation.

Suggested accommodations to base yourself at while playing Sotogrande Old: All hotels.

 Valderrama

Don't be fooled by its unassuming appearance, Valderrama, one of Europe's toughest tests, presents a series of subtle difficulties, such as fallen trees, which have been left to encroach. The rough, never too long, is also a force to be reckoned with. Valderrama served as the venue for the 1997 Ryder Cup and Volvo Masters.

Suggested accommodations to base yourself at while playing Sotogrande Old: All hotels.
